Hi, everyone! It's time again for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now?" survey. As you know, I consider Freepers to be among the more well-read groups currently on the Internet. Each quart, I like to find out what everyone is reading. It can be anything...a technical journal, a NY Times best-seller, a trashy pulp novel...in short, anything! Please do not ruin this thread by posting something inane like "I'm reading this post". It became very unfunny a long time ago. I'll start. I'm reading a historical biography called "John L Lewis: Labor Leader" by Robert Zieger. I have found...

Playboy magazine started in the USA in 1953 and has branched into 26 international editions including the European country of Portugal. Playboy Portugal just released their July 2010 edition featuring none other than Jesus Cristo (Jesus Christ) on the front cover as well as a multi-page spread within. It didn't take long for the news to get back to Playboy headquarters and for them to take official action. Theresa Hennessy, Playboy Enterprises' vice president of public relations, had this to say: "We did not see or approve the cover and pictorial in the July issue of Playboy Portugal. It is...

Marking the death of an atheist by depicting Jesus Christ in sex scenes might seem like a non-sequitur. Somehow, it made sense to the Portuguese edition of Playboy magazine. The magazine features an actor portraying Jesus in at least four pornographic photos, including the cover, where he cradles an apparently dead - and bare-breasted - woman. Another photo depicts Jesus watching a lesbian kiss, while another shows him observing a topless woman reading a book. The images are reportedly meant to commemorate the death of Portuguese author Jose Saramago. He wrote, among many other books, "The Gospel According to Jesus...

It's called Jihad Recollections and is a production of Charlotte, NC al Qaeda supporter Samir Khan's self-styled jihad media company, as-Fursan. You can download a PDF version at the links provided by Sammy here. The magazine is 70 pages of the same kind of garbage that you'd expect from al Qaeda itself, and certainly not from an American living in North Carolina. It seems to be imitating several other jihad magazines, which started with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's Voice of Jihad. In addition to links to al Qaeda produced videos all within a clear context of support (note...

While people tend to read magazines, those who prefer to point a gun at them might pick up the July issue of Field & Stream. “Shoot this magazine!” the cover reads, and inside is a pull-out target that spells out “I (Heart) Guns.” “This is something you cannot do with an iPad,” Philip Bourjaily, the shotguns editor, said, then rethought that statement. “You can take it out and shoot it, but it’s prohibitively expensive.” The target insert from Field & Stream promotes a TV show. Alrighty then, so let’s move on to the third and thankfully last thought: On Thursday, May 14th, the 3-D Playboy hit the newsstands. And no doubt, hundreds have donned their 3-D glasses, gathered a “full head of steam”, and “spanked the light fantastic.” While the imagination boggles and cringes, it also rolls on the floor laughing...

With the Washington Post Co. (NYSE: WPO) already considering the sale of Newsweek, the first quarter results surely cemented it. While other magazines were showing signs of life, Newsweek continued its steep decline, with revenue dropping 36 percent to $29.4 million driven by a 38 percent loss in ad revenue. By comparison, the Washington Post showed an 8 percent decrease in print ad rev in Q1—and an 8 percent increase for digital revenue. (our coverage.) Still, by reducing expenses, the company managed to narrow Newsweek‘s losses to $2.3 million for Q1, compared with $20.3 million in Q109. The ‘09 quarter...
